Every Shelter and DoinGud Team up to Help Refugees get Access to Quality Shelter
Do you remember the last time you had to take shelter from a storm, or maybe a natural disaster? How comforting it was to know that you were safe and warm, sitting in your own home with loved ones.
Now imagine that you are one of the more than 80 million people on Earth who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. What do you do? Where do you go?
Every Shelter believe they have an obligation to ensure that all people have access to quality shelter and emergency supplies.
That’s why Every Shelter creates jobs for refugees, employing them to create sustainable shelter products for other refugees. They are creating economic opportunities for refugees by training them to manufacture products.
Every Shelter often finds inspiration in the clever ways refugees use resources to improve their shelters. They saw refugees repurposing old discarded billboards as tarps for their shelters — a solution which could last years, instead of months. This was used in 2020 to help over 11,000 disaster victims in the United States and was piloted in 2021 in 2 different refugee camps.
Every Shelter has many initiatives. One of them, Emergency Floor, helps provide Palestinian refugees with better housing conditions. According to a survey by Every Shelter, refugee families spent an average of 16.54 hours per day on the floor of their shelters. Aid organizations are not allowed to pour concrete as a flooring solution. In response, Every Shelter’s founders created Emergency Floor, a temporary, plastic flooring that provides warmth, health benefits, and a bit of dignity.
In a follow-up survey, more than half of the households reported fewer trips to health clinics, better sleep, and less fuel needed to stay warm.
These, and other initiatives are helping create jobs for refugees, empowering them to become self-sufficient and make a living.
